Towards Po Lin

At Mui Wo 1, [map] take a no. 2 bus to Ngong Ping. The ride (45 mins) takes you past coastal scenery, including Cheung Sha 2 [map], Hong Kong’s longest beach, and into the mountains. If in a hurry, take MTR to Tung Chung station, where you can get the Ngong Ping 360 cable car.

Lantau

From the end of the bus route, walk up to the Po Lin Monastery 3 [map]; if arriving by cable car, follow the signs. Founded in 1905, Po Lin’s temples and gardens are dominated by the vast, iconic 24m (79ft) Big Buddha. The restaurant here, see 1, serves vegetarian food.

Adding to Po Lin’s popularity is Ngong Ping Village 4 [map] (daily 10am–6pm; charges to some attractions), a newly built Chinese village, with shops, a tea house and theatres showing Buddhist-themed tales. It is the terminus for the Ngong Ping 360 Skyrail cable car (Mon–Fri 10am–6pm, Sat–Sun 9.30am–6.30pm), which runs to Tung Chung, weather-permitting.

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, follow the steep trail from here to Lantau Peak 5 [map], at 934m/3,064ft, Hong Kong’s second-highest mountain.
